Infringement of RubyHiroba Anti-Harassment Policy (Report #2)
Two presentations at the RubyHiroba 2014 LTthon were brought to the attention of organizers as possibly infringing the event's stated Anti-Harassment Policy.
The RubyHiroba 2014 LTthon is an event in which participants give 5-minute-long lightning talks. Some participants pre-register for the event while others decide to make a presentation on the spot.
The organizing team concluded that of the two incidents, one clearly contravened the Anti-Harassment Policy, while no clear judgment was reached in the other case. However, in both cases the issues were discussed thoroughly by the team and with the presenters themselves. A record of these discussions is included for reference.
Actions related to Anti-Harassment Policy
- RubyHiroba 2014 Anti-Harassment Policy posted on the website and linked to from the LTthon pre-registration form.
- RubyHiroba Anti-Harassment Policy written so as to be nearly identical to the RubyKaigi 2014 policy.
- No steps were taken to notify pre-registered LTthon participants of existence of the policy.
- LTthon participants were asked to submit three pieces of information: an online handle (Twitter account, etc.), a presentation title, and an email address. No screening of presentation material took place.
- Same-day participants to the LTthon were asked to write their handle on a whiteboard. Again, no pre-screening of the presentations was performed.
- The organizers resolved before the event to interrupt and terminate any presentation whose material contravened the Anti-Harassment Policy.
Case 1: Slides showing sexual images in public spaces

- Organizers did not reach a decision to stop the presentation while it was taking place.
- Following the presentation, the organizing team was approached by participants with concerns the presentation.
- Following the presentations, the organizing team asked participants to submit a copy of their slides.
- The organizing team concluded that the slides that the presentation content contravened the Anti-Harassment Policy (section on "sexual images in public spaces").
- The organizing team asked the presenters to retract their presentation slides.
(For reference) Case 2: Presentation mentioning "physical appearance"
- Slides contained material which organizers felt may have infringed on the Anti-Harassment Policy.
- Organizers did not reach a decision to stop the presentation while it was taking place.
- Following the presentation, the organizing team was approached by participants with concerns the presentation.
- Following the presentation, the presenter posted the slides of their presentation on their blog. The organizers asked the presenter to take down the slides, and the presenter agreed.
- The organizing team discussed whether the presentation contravened the Anti-Harassment Policy (section on "physical appearance"), but determined that it did not clearly contravene the policy.
- However, while it did not explicitly contravene the policy, the presentation was contrary to the original spirit of the policy.
- The organizing team contacted the presenter to:
- tell them that they could put the slides back up on their site, and
- to pass on feedback from some participants to the event, who felt that the content of the talk was not appropriate.
